Form Follows Fun - Omop squirt bottle
The Problem
I’m just going to say it - Swiffer is a sustainability nerd’s nightmare. It’s so good and so convenient and also a total sh*t show when it comes to waste and single use plastics. So when method looked to develop a more sustainable sweeper/mop, I was excited to say the least.
Our approach was to create a more function stick mop and then make the consumable sweeper cloths from renewable and compostable materials. We developed a beautifully fragranced cleaning solution to spray on your floor to help impart a nice shine and pick up the dust, and we needed a way to dispense it - the “Squirt and Mop” was born.
The spray solution
Knowing that functionality was going to be key, I focused my efforts on developing an iconic bottle that was visually sympathetic to the Omop (our stick mop) and also functional for squirting. What I landed on was shape that worked well for everything except labeling. The label panel was tiny, but I was really pushing up against technical constraints to do better (Blow ratios for you engineers!) . The label panel was recessed and almost impossible to label conventionally. We almost gave up, when our contract filler remembered that they had an old labeling machine in the back that “blew” labels into place, we trailed it and it worked a charm.
