Breaking Category Rules - method Bathroom

The problem

Bathrooms have long be vilified as places of germs and dirt. Products designed for these spaces have followed the rules of emphasizing 99% kill rates and “kapow!” efficacy. method wanted to change the conversation in the category and re-frame it to one about a “spa-like” experience. Cleaning power for sure, but also coupled with great fragrances and bottles you would feel proud to leave out in your temple of renewal and zen.

The Spa solution

I designed two bathroom products for method. The first being “le Scrub” - a light abrasive cleaner for porcelain and fittings. I had noticed that whenever you photographed (as I do) conventional versions of this cleaner in a home, they would always be stored with a random cloth or sponge that was used with it for cleaning. I decided to design in a nifty storage solution into the bottle, which gave it unique functionality and a very distinct look (we called it the clothespin). This changed the bottle into a “system” with integrated storage.

“Lil’Blow Blu” was my attempt to create a toilet bowl cleaner that you would be proud to display. I focused on creating a beautiful silhouette for the bottle in contrast to the highly industrial and commoditized “duck” bottles that have ubiquitous for decades (Shout out to SC Johnson!) The bottle turned out as a lil’ piece of functional sculpture for your “temple of solitude”.
